So far, the proposed plate has only gotten a little more than 450 orders. That’s way below the 7,500 orders needed before the state's Department of Motor Vehicles will begin producing it.
Amy Hutzel is with the agency sponsoring the license plate – the California Coastal Conservancy. The agency has until mid-July to get the remaining orders.
“It’s been going slower than we expected and I think a large part of that is the economy. We launched the program in July of ’08 and then everybody knows what happened in September of ’08. And it’s just been tough. I think people have less disposable income for things like this.”
It costs $50 to sign up for the plate and the annual renewal fee is $40.
The group's goal is to raise $1 million by selling the plates…which feature a small image of the Golden Gate Bridge. Meanwhile, state officials say other specialized license plates have also seen their sales decline.
