The California lawmakers called today’s meeting a success, saying they and about 20 members of the state's congressional delegation agreed to work together more in the future to prevent future deficits.

But the current problem isn’t fixed.

Governor Schwarzenegger contends the federal formulas for dispensing money have hurt California.  He says that for every dollar sent to Washington Californians only get 78 cents back.

He admits that’s the number has changed since Congress passed its stimulus package.  Silicon Valley Democrat Zoe Lofgren says the actual amount now is closer to $1.50.

Still, Schwarzenegger is crusading against the smaller number.  He says the state can’t rely on one time spikes in revenue.

“Because every time we have spikes in revenue people assume they’re going to continue. They don’t. What we have to do if there are spikes in revenues we should put that aside, pay off the debt that we have, or put it aside for a rainy day fund or use it for one-time use. But not go and spend it for ongoing programs.” (.18)

This was the second day of Washington meetings the Governor had.  He said he’s optimistic, but he’s leaving without the extra $7 billion asked for.
