Speaker: "Without further ado,
let me present to you Congresswoman Doris Matsui!"
(applause)
The crowd at Midtown's Trinity Cathedal rose to their feet to
welcome Matsui back to her district. The congresswoman joked
she'd talked about health care so much recently, she lost her
voice.
Matsui: "And we all know this
has been a very long road. We have a few scars, you
know? And worn-out shoes. But you know what? I
believe it was worth it."
And so did the few-dozen people in attendance - even though
many of them had hoped for an even bigger overhaul. Joan Fox
of Citrus Heights is a Medicare advocate for seniors.
Fox: "To get what we want was a
great step and a big accomplishment. So no, I'm not
disappointed, because I think that when people actually see this
bill roll out and see the benefits to our citizens, that more will
come."
We also checked with the offices of two Republican members of
Congress who represent the Sacramento region. Tom McClintock
held a town hall meeting over the weekend in South Lake Tahoe and
has another one scheduled for Monday in Rough and Ready, near Grass
Valley. Dan Lungren is meeting with chambers of commerce,
businesses and constituents in his district. Both strongly
oppose the health care bill.
