Business Journal: Clean & Green Projects Attract Funding

The Sacramento region has collected about $1 billion in federal stimulus funds, helping with everything from building roads to keeping police officers on patrol. Clean-tech and green business has earned its fair share of the funding though, with almost $224 million from the American Recovery and Relief Act. Now, much of those funds — about $128 million — is earmarked for a local smart-grid system for the Sacramento Municipal Utility District. But numerous other clean-and-green efforts are also getting stimulus funds, including almost $25 million for Solar Power Inc. to build a solar-panel manufacturing plant at the McClellan Business Park to funds for green business job-training programs at local colleges. Local officials say the region’s clean-tech effort is among the leaders in the nation when it comes to getting stimulus funds, but it’s hard to quantify since many Congressional leaders fail to track the dollars in their districts.
