The group Tenants Together says more than 37% of the homes in foreclosure last year were rentals…affecting more than 200,000 people.

Last year, President Obama signed a bill requiring landlords losing property to foreclosure to give their tenants 90-days notice to vacate. The year before, Governor Schwarzenegger signed a bill giving tenants a 30-day notice.

Dean Preston of Tenants Together says these laws do provide tenants with some time…

"But it's really a short term fix. They don't provide any long term security for tenants in these properties. The most exciting developments have come at the local level where cities around California have passed local 'just cause for eviction laws.'"

He says under those local laws, foreclosure is not a basis for evicting tenants…but not paying your rent on time could get you evicted. Right now, only 16 California cities have adopted just cause laws.
