Interim County Executive Steven Szalay says the deal involves a mix of early retirement incentives and increased pension payments.
Szalay: “All that together forms a package that is totally paid for and will provide the mitigation of up to 70 layoffs in the department. There still will be a service-level reduction, but it would be less than if there was the layoffs.”
The sheriff’s department has already cut its patrol service severely in the unincorporated areas of the county – including densely-populated neighborhoods like Arden Arcade and Carmichael.
Union members have been voting on the deal over the last few days, and voting concludes at midnight Monday. If the bargain falls through, the deputies would lose their jobs this Friday.
