Prop 8 Appeal / Meningitis / Oral Cancer / Recycling Practices

Prop 8 Appeal Same-sex couples in California were getting ready to tie the knot this week, but their plans are suspended. An appeals court has extended the ban on same-sex marriage while it considers Proposition 8. Today on Insight, we'll talk with a legal expert about it.

Meningitis There's a campaign in Sacramento County to encourage young people to get vaccinated against meningitis, a potentially deadly and contagious disease that causes swelling of the brain and spinal cord. We'll talk with a local woman who lost her 15-year-old daughter to the disease less than 13 hours after the first symptom appeared.

Early Detection for Oral Cancer UC Davis researchers have developed a fiber optic probe for the early detection of oral cancer. A trial with human subjects shows that the device could also be used during surgery to locate the edges of a tumor. We'll talk with the researchers about it.

Recycling Practices Recycling practices vary widely from city to city, county to county and even city to county. We look at two ways local municipalities are handling their recycling - Truckee's "blue bags" and Placer county's catch-all. Why the differences? And where does it all end up anyway?
