Land use decisions aren't glamorous - but they're almost always contentious.  And Sacramento County's General Plan governs them all.  Officials are working on an update to the existing land use plan to last through the year 2030.  Leighann Moffitt with the county's planning department is overseeing the project.

Moffitt: "We want complete communities that have a balance between residential, employment, retail, have adequate services, have opportunities for various modes of travel." 

Moffitt says the proposed update includes work on older commercial corridors like Florin, Fair Oaks and North Watt.  It also plans for new growth along the Jackson Highway and in far eastern Sacramento County.  But Rob Burness with the Environmental Council of Sacramento says the new development is poorly planned. He says there's too much sprawl - and that would stretch the county's services too thin.

Burness: "Clearly, over a long period of time, there would be changes.  Congestion would be worse, police services would decline, overall ability of the county to provide any kind of service would decline."

Supervisors will hold several more hearings in the next couple of months.  They hope to take a final vote in October.
