Safe Ground Debate May Be Coming

At last night's City Council meeting…Councilman Rob Fong suggested the issue should be addressed before the winter weather arrives. Mayor Kevin Johnson agreed…and directed city staff to come up with some plans…

"In preparation maybe to identify three sites where potentially Safe Ground could go, clearly identify what a path would look like with roles and responsibilities along with a timeline."

Homeless advocates are urging the city to change its ordinance making it illegal to camp in public. Johnson says he thinks supporters of a safe, homeless campsite deserve to have the issue debated publicly.

Last winter…Johnson convinced a group of homeless people to spend the winter in motels instead of camping illegally by offering city-funded motel vouchers.
