Food Bank Donations Keep Up With Larger Crowds

It's no surprise that more people would need food these days.  Some Sacramento food banks served as many as six-thousand people on Thanksgiving Day alone.  But what might be surprising is that donations have managed to meet the needs of the larger crowds - crowds that look different this year.  Patty Shaw is the coordinator of a South Sacramento food bank.

Shaw: "The face of poverty has changed to people who are just like everybody else out there.  Their mortgage is so high, they can't afford to put food on their table.  A couple people have lost their jobs, so they're all pitching together, trying to make ends meet.  It's incredible to see the need."

While food donations seem steady, other donations have lagged.  The Central Downtown Food Basket says it's been harder to raise money this year.  And the Salvation Army had to buy more toys for its annual distribution than in previous years - because toy donations were down.
