The Cash for Appliances program kicked off last spring with more than 35 million dollars worth of rebates. Californians could exchange their old refrigerators and washers for rebates on more environmentally friendly models.

Amy Morgan is with the California Energy Commission. She says the program had been popular from the beginning, but it really grew when water heaters and AC units were added over the summer.

"When we launched this program we were seeing approximately 2 - 3000 applications a week, when we expanded the program in late July we started to see 2 - 3000 applications a day."

Morgan says if there are any refunds still available after the New Year, applications will be considered on a first come first serve basis. Though, she adds she doesn't expect anything will be left over.
