Fight Brewing Over Boats In Sierra Lake

Environmentalists are worried that allowing boats into Independence Lake will trigger the spread of invasive species - like quagga mussels which have spread from boat hulls into Lake Mead.

"We've certainly seen in other lakes in the Sierra what can happen when that gets out of balance."

Dan Roth is with the Nature Conservancy. Last year, the conservation group bought the land around the lake...ending the possibility of developers buying the land and building condos.

But the Conservancy doesn't allow boats on the lake…something people like Robert Haug of the group Friends of Independence Lake are opposed to.

"I think they're being overly cautious. I do support the invasive species program to a certain point. But I believe the public has the right to access the water using their own boats."

The Nature Conservancy is currently conducting a public survey on its website about boating and other recreational uses for the lake.

A public forum on the lake's future will be held at the Truckee Town Hall today at 5:30 PM.
