Federal officials say prescription drug abuse is an epidemic.

"The number of people entering into hospital emergency rooms because of prescription drug misuse is higher than it is for illicit drugs like cocaine and heroin."

Benjamin Wagner is the U.S. Attorney in Sacramento. He says it is far too easy for people who shouldn't have access to prescription drugs, to get them.

"70%-80% of prescription drugs that are misused come from friends and relatives and out of medicine cabinets."

You can drop off your old drugs at police departments throughout the region on Saturday. The DEA will also be hosting a Sacramento collection site at the U.S. Postal Office near the corner of Fulton and Marconi avenues from 10 AM to 2 PM.
