New Arena Next Step In Kings Struggle

Plans to build a new sports and entertainment complex in Sacramento have failed repeatedly.  But past failures may have taught Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson a lesson.

"Tax payers have to come first.  There's got to be transparency.  The public has to be sure that their tax dollars are being invested properly and there has to be a lot of outreach."

The National Basketball Association will be helping with that outreach over the next ten months.  The NBA has announced that it wants the Kings to stay in Sacramento and will be taking an active role in the process.
Johnson says this time the owners of the Kings know they must invest money in a new sports and entertainment complex if the city builds one.
"And I think they're up to that challenge.  I talked with Gavin yesterday and he said look.  We want to cooperate, we want to participate.  And we want to be part of a winning team."
The question is whether the Maloofs will invest enough money to win the support of taxpayers.  SOC.
