The hearing was prompted by a State Audit that found the Commission on Teacher Credentialing had a backlog of thousands of reports involving alleged teacher misconduct. That included serious allegations such as exposing students to pornography:
"The lives of school children are literally put in danger by an agency that seems to show no sense of urgency in protecting our kids."
Democratic Senate Leader Darrell Steinberg says he's considering legislation to reorganize the commission and improve its performance. Ting Sun chairs the commission. She says the members are working to improve practices:
"It is inexcusable for this agency to sit on any documentation no matter what level of seriousness of the alleged misconduct."
