Interstate 80 is the main route for people traveling between the Sacramento region and the Bay Area. But it's also how people who live in Fairfield and Vacaville get around.

"We don't have a lot of alternatives for local traffic. The residents between those cities use I-80 kind of as Main Street."

Daryl Halls heads the Solano Transportation Authority which is moving forward on a plan to upgrade side roads from two-lanes to four so that local drivers don't have to get on 80. It's called the Jepson Parkway Project.

"Some of the local trips can stay on the Jepson Parkway and then that way the regional trips, for residents in Sacramento, hopefully that'll just kind of reduce the future growth of traffic on I-80."

Money for the 12-mile corridor will come from local and state agencies. Construction is expected to start in 2014.
