It's no surprise the grueling world of professional bike racing produces some of the best conditioned athletes in the world. But it may surprise you to know that several professional riders like Mexico's Javier Megiias Leal are diabetic. And in this year's tour of California, Leal along with a handful of non diabetic riders are wearing glucose monitors with transmitters.
FRIAS: You talk about quote unquote bonking, when you run out of energy is when you run out of glucose.

Doctor Juan Frias from UC San Diego is heading up the study and he says the tour is an ideal real world laboratory.

FRIAS: You are talking about intermittent high intensity exercise where you are mixing aerobic with anaerobic. It's not like swimming twenty five yards or something. Here you really got a mix of the two and you are doing sequential days.

Frias and his study team will be  following the eight day tour across California making sure the equipment works and monitoring the data.
