Dispute Between Caltrans and Cal Water Could Cost Marysville Residents

A lawsuit filed in Yuba county by California Water Service Co. says Caltrans wants Cal Water to pay for replacing sections of water main under the road that connects the E Street bridge with the 10th Street bridge.

That's a stretch of about nine blocks. Cal Water's Lynne McGhee says:

"If we were to do that, it would cost $3 million.  That would materially affect our rates.  We don't think our customers should be paying for that."

McGhee says the state issued Cal Water an easement in 1890 and that if Caltrans wants to rip out pipe, then Caltrans needs to pay for it.

Caltrans would not comment on the suit, but did say the project is scheduled to go to bid next spring.

Thirty-seven hundred customers get their water from Cal Water.
