The Truckee Donner Land Trust is getting $2.4 million from the state's Wildlife Conservation Board to buy 2,683 acres of land from the Sierra Pacific Industries lumber company.

Perry Norris heads the land trust.

"This is land that could have been sold off for what we call rural sprawl or 160-acre ranchettes sort of development. So these lands are open to the public to enjoy and hike and it's a popular snowmobiling area as well."

The site is about 16-miles northwest of Truckee, near Webber Lake.

The California Wildlife Conservation Board is also funding projects to help restore and protect fish and wildlife habitat in Mendocino County's Eel River Peninsula and Sonoma County's Baxter Ranch.
