"Operation Dry Water" is a nationwide campaign. There's even a media blitz with this public service announcement that doesn't pull any punches:
Female Voice: "You wouldn't believe what we see out here. The worst accidents and injuries happen when boaters are under the influence..."
Gloria Sandoval is with the California Department of Boating and Waterways. She says statewide there were 570 boating accidents last year. And nearly 30% of all boating fatalities were alcohol-related.
"I've seen people with backpacks filled with alcohol. That's their purpose, going out there, having fun, which is okay to have fun out boating. But at the same time there are risks involved with drinking alcohol."
It's illegal to operate a boat if your blood alcohol level is 0.08% or higher. Violators can be fined, arrested and have their boats impounded.
The timing of "Operation Dry Water" is significant. Figures show more boating accidents occur in July than in any other month.
