In Marysville, City Councilman Ricky Samayoa can't wait to start planting plot number 9, his part of what will be the new community garden at the corner of 2nd and C streets in the old Chinatown district. The garden was part of his campaign platform.
RICKY SAMAYOA: "I thought this would be a great way to kind of build places where we have a sense of community, where people could come together, you get to meet your neighbor."
The garden broke ground over the weekend and is the latest in a growing number of such gardens.
Bill Maynard oversees them for the city of Sacramento and is helping Marysville with its garden. He sees great promise for the Marysville site.
BILL MAYNARD: "The master gardeners will be training the pubic on using it as a training garden . The library is excellently situated right across the street, so it's a great spot."
Maynard says the number of Sacramento gardens has doubleD to 11 and should grow again by three by the end of the year.
