Under the measure, social science textbooks at state schools would be updated at the next regularly scheduled time to reflect LGBT contributions. It passed the Assembly accompanied by heated debate. Here's Democratic Assemblyman Tom Ammiano, who is gay and strongly supports the bill:
Ammiano:"How could any teacher say because something's not mentioned, then therefore that's not discrimination? I will not be erased!"
But Republican Assemblyman Tim Donnelly said he was deeply offended by the measure:
Donnelly "It's one thing to say that we should be tolerant. It is something else altogether for my colleague to say that my children are going to be taught that this lifestyle is good and that it is not to be criticized and that anyone who has any historical role, that this is to be glorified."
