The district knew it had a deficit left over from last year's budget, but was blind-sided by a three percent drop in property tax revenues this year. Station 68 near Sunrise and Douglas will be closed for at least a year. Assistant Chief Scott Cockrum says the station in Rancho Cordova was built in anticipation of rapid growth that never happened.
COCKRUM:13 "We have a computer program that actually we can evaluate statistically the call volumes and impacts and responses. We spent a week looking at every angle and aspect of this."
The firefighters leaving station 68 will fill vacancies at other stations. Station 106 in the Arden Arcade area will have to rely on other stations for a water truck.
The cuts and district-wide hiring freeze make up the nearly six million dollars deficit the district had to overcome.
