Toralv Dirro was one of the researchers who went through massive amounts of data collected on a server that logged the attacks.  Dirro says whoever was behind the attacks used email viruses to gain access to the information held by companies, governments and even non-profit organizations.

DIRRO: "This attack, as big as it is, it really is like not even the tip of the iceberg.  It's like the snow coating on the tip of the iceberg.  We know of literally hundreds of thousands of out of control servers who are maybe similar operations."

McAfee says one northern California county, a southern California county, several U.S. government agencies, and an International Olympic Committee were hacked.  But, the company would not release any further details for fear of inviting future attacks.
