The fines could be as much as ten thousand dollars a week.
The board of supervisors has said it will eventually change zoning to allow dispensaries, but in the meantime, it wants them shut down. Steve Pedretti is Director of Code Enforcement. He says the sheriff's department can assist the county in fining property owners for zoning ordinance and building code violations.
PEDRETTI: "We want to let them know. There will be no grandfathering. These penalties will be issued. We will lien the properties and follow up. So that's a key part of what we're doing. We want to let the owners know that the county is serious in what we are doing."
The increased cost of the plan is projected to be about a half a million dollars. The county says there are 56 pot shops operating in Sacramento County illegally. Such stores are legal in the city of Sacramento.
