NEWS RELEASE FROM CALFIRE The mandatory evacuation order  of 4,800 homes and businesses in Lincoln's downtown area will remain in place at least through tomorrow (Thursday) as fire crews work to remove propane from the 29,000 gallon tanker that caught fire yesterday.

The process of removing the propane will be completed under the supervision of the experts from Texas who are highly trained in the "hot tap" process. They are a nationally recognized team that can attach a pipe to the tanker that is on fire. The propane will be siphoned off into nearby pond, which was dug specifically for this activity. Once the propane is in the pond it will be safely burned off.

Officials hope the fire will be extinguished early tomorrow morning.

Lincoln schools will be closed the remainder of the week and anticipate opening on Monday. City Hall is closed. There is no anticipated time for reopening.

Officials urge residents who have stayed behind in the evacuation zone to seek shelter at one of the three facilities staff by the Red Cross with support from the Salvation Army. The Red Cross will have its online shelter check-in process working by noon today. Those at the shelter will register online when they check-in. Family members can find if out if their family members are at shelters at www.safeandwell.org or 1.800.REDCROSS.

Officials have established a 1 mile evacuation radius which includes a large portion of Lincoln on both the East and West side of Highway 65. Areas currently being evacuated include everything NE of Highway 65 & Ferrari Ranch road all the way to the northern City Limit, east of Joiner Parkway, south of Nicolaus Road and north of First Street.
