The bill is the second in a two-part package known as the California Dream Act. The measure allows some undocumented college students to compete for state financial aid. That includes assistance offered by colleges and universities and in some cases, Cal Grants. Democratic Senator Ron Calderon supports the bill:
Calderon: "Those who work hard and become good students, should not be punished for decisions made by their parents."
But many Republicans - such as Assemblyman Tim Donnelley - oppose the legislation:
Donnelly:"No matter how deserving these - these students are - we shouldn't be creating an incentive that's going to make California a magnet for illegal immigration."
