Fifteen-year-old Juan Furritas is with the "Just Keep It Healthy" youth group. He urged City Council members last night to pass ordinances that would promote healthy living.

"For example, I live in southeast Stockton. There is more advertisement for alcohol, tobacco and other unhealthier items than fruit, vegetables or anything healthy. Proper nutrition and adequate physical activity are key but not all neighborhoods are designed the same."

At the meeting, the city council approved a proclamation recognizing Childhood Obesity Month.

San Joaquin County health officials say 33% of children in the area…in grades 5, 7 and 9…are overweight or obese. They say obese children have an 80% chance of becoming obese adults.
