Abalone have been found dead or in distress since late August.  Fish and Game does not know why the abalone are dying, but state biologists believe a large, red tide bloom of plankton may be to blame. 

Fish and Game has received reports of other shellfish in the area dying as well.

Divers are encouraged to avoid the affected areas. Abalone fishermen are advised to call a doctor immediately if they feel sick.
