As the report makes clear, having smoggy air is not good for public health. It increases incidents of asthma attacks and excacerbates resperatory illness. The new study comes at a highly charged time when it comes to air quality. President Obama recently delayed implementing tougher air standards citing economic reasons. Sean Carroll with Environment California says there are other efforts underway in congress that would weaken air quality in California.
CARROLL: "And right now we are calling on strong protections to our clean air act in Congress. There is a number of attempts by house leadership to undermine clean air regulations that have been in place."
Carroll says because most air pollution in the Sacramento region comes from cars and trucks, it's important that the Obama administration holds the line on its tough new fuel efficiency standard. They call for the average to double in the next fifteen years.
