UC Davis to Develop Food Safety Training Program

The Food and Drug Administration awarded the university more than a million dollars to develop a training program for food industry leaders and inspectors.

The project is part of the new federal food safety standards created earlier this year.

GOLDENBERG: "Even though the U.S. has the safest food supply, that doesn't mean that there are no problems"

David Goldenberg is with UC Davis. He says their training program will help FDA inspectors know what to look for on the farm.

He says a safer food supply could help the state's agriculture industry.  

GOLDENBERG: "California is the number one agricultural producing state, and we have so much to lose if our products are involved in food illness tracebacks, we have so much to protect for our agricultural our jobs and economy."

UC Davis says food illness costs the US economy more than $150 billion dollars a year in health care and workplace losses.
