The signups start Saturday. Brent Barnhart is Director of the state's Department of Managed Healthcare. He says some unscrupulous insurance agents are pushing seniors away from supplemental insurance and into the Advantage plan by telling them only about the positives.
BARNHART: "With the med sup, you basically have to get every bill from every health care professional who has served you and then submit a claim to the Medicare supplement carrier. Medicare advantage is all paid up front, so that's one advantage."
But you may have to switch doctors or hospitals. Barnhart says some agents may avoid that subject because the commission on an Advantage sale is twice that of other plans.
The department receives 100 complaints each year about unscrupulous agents. Barnhart recommends seniors read all of the paperwork to make sure the Advantage plan is right for them.
