Schenirer's "Way Up" initiative kicked off at the Oak Park Community Center with a broccoli-planting demonstration for kids from Keith B Kenny Elementary.  Broccoli is just part of Schenirer's five-part plan.

SCHENIRER: "It's got pieces of health, education, home ownership, jobs, community gardens.  It's really a comprehensive look at what the city and its partners including the four health systems here including  the Sacramento City Unified School District can do to support a strong, vibrant neighborhood."

The initiative's partners soon hope to start the process of converting run-down properties into affordable housing.  Kids will sell healthy food and snacks at below-market levels to the neighborhood as a fundraiser for school programs.   The medical clinic, The Effort will give every student in Oak Park a physical in the next year and three health industry academies are being planned.
