The more environmentally friendly a new arena is…the faster it can be built according to State Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg. Steinberg spoke before a group of arena supporters in West Sacramento today.  The group discussed opportunities to make an arena greener.

Steinberg says Assembly Bill 900, which is now law, could help speed up the arena project by two-to-three years if the arena is environmentally friendly.

STEINBERG:  "It must be a project that is intended to be certified under the Silver LEED standard for energy, energy use, and design.

Under the new law, any lawsuits against such a green project would go directly to the state appeals court.  Also a time-consuming bit of paperwork called the administrative record that normally delays a project by six months can be compiled while the project is being built.

Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson's office says getting Silver LEED certification would add about $5.5 million to the cost of the $370 million project.
