After seven games and a streak of blowout losses, the Sacramento Kings' head coach has been fired.
The Kings started out the year with promise, beating the Los Angeles Lakers in the home opener. But the team would lose four of the next five by an average of 19 points per game. The margin of defeat and the unorganized play that led to some of those losses… had local fan pages and blogs starting to call for Westphal's ouster. Denver beat Sacramento by 27 Wednesday night.
The Kings announced assistant Keith Smart will be the interim head coach. Smart was the head man at Golden State last year. He was fired after a 36-46 season.
In a written statement, General Manager Geoff Petrie thanked Westphal for his efforts. Westphal in turn called the Kings management "first class in every way" and wished his players and the Kings' fans success.
Westphal won 51 games and lost 120 during his time with the Kings.
