Right now, the Department of General Services has final say over Cal Expo. But, a bill by Assemblyman Roger Dickinson would give control to the State Fair Leasing Authority. The Authority is made up mostly of the Cal Expo Board of Directors. The change would allow Cal Expo freedom to sell or lease part of the property or put out a request for partners interested in developing it. Cal Expo wants to raise money to improve existing facilities or build new ones. Dickinson says improvements are needed if Cal Expo is to keep attracting events, concerts and the State Fair.
DICKINSON: "If they lose those events, it hurts our local economy. We lose our place as a showcase for the state in terms of the State Fair And, so it would be both a cultural and economic loss to the region
The bill passed a committee test this week. Cal Expo has already said it can't afford the existing harness racing operation and is looking for someone else to run it.
