A group of East Sacramento neighbors has succeeded in keeping the community center and library open at McKinley Park. The way they did it could be the way parks in the City of Sacramento are operated in the future.
The Friends of East Sac went to corporate sponsors then went to residents when it became evident the city could no longer afford to keep the doors open. Cecily Hastings led the charge to pay off the $45,000 operating deficit. Without the group's efforts, the Clunie community center most likely would have closed in July and the library inside would have closed right along with it..
HASTINGS: "We've established a $60,000 building fund because this is an old building and we've already figured out it's a money pit. And, we want to restore it to its glory of probably what it was 75 years ago."
Friends of East Sac says with proper management the Clunie Center can bring in $100,000 a year. The group is also raising money for the renovation of the park's rose garden.
