California's Department of Fish and Game has had computerized maps of the state for some time, but, until now, it never mapped the waters and ocean floor off the California Coast.
Tom Lupo with Fish and Game says, depending on the year, locations of protected habitats and designated fishing areas may change. To make it easier to keep track, Fish and Game have made that information available on your computer or on your smart phone.
LUPO "Historically, we would have put out a long regs, regulations booklet with meets and bounds of some verbal description as to the areas. But, it's map data. So, being able to use our Geographic Information Systems -GIS platform here -this computer mapping technology to show them a picture is much more effective."
Lupo hopes to put out more information on the website about fishing seasons, locations of fish, and whatever else his staff can think of, when they find some grant money to fund it.
