Environment California's Bernadette Del Chiaro says the city is producing 16 mega watts of power each year. That's seventh-most in generation capacity in the state.
DEL CHIARO: "Every megawatt of solar power we install reduces smog-forming air pollution by over 700 pounds each year and global warming pollution by 900 tons each year."
Mayor Kevin Johnson says the city will continue to push for more solar projects.
JOHNSON: "we have a double digit unemployment rate which is far too high. But, the green sector in solar panel installations allows us to hire people so we are looking at financing and other opportunities."
Combined, Roseville and Sacramento have about 2200 solar installations, which is half of what San Diego has.
Chico, Woodland and Rancho Cordova are in the top 10 for solar capacity per capita.
