At least six of Sacramento's public swimming pools may be open
this summer, if Save Mart Supermarkets is successful in raising a
half a million dollars in donations.
Save Mart launched its "Save Our Pools" campaign at its
Folsom Boulevard store in Sacramento with a promise to match
the first $500,000 in donations. Without the fundraiser,
there wouldn't be funding to open the pools this year. Save
Mart's Steve Junquiero says the company is grateful for the
opportunity to help.
JUNQUIERO: "I too can remember hot summers in Tracy, California where every kid in town was at the pool and I don't think that kids have changed much since then."
Shoppers and businesses can donate online, buy "Save Our
Pools" placards, or buy specially-marked items that automatically
come with a ten-cent donation courtesy of the suppliers.
If more than half-a-million dollars in donations are
collected, the excess will go to opening up one of the other six
pools that are scheduled to be closed this summer.
The campaign will run for eight weeks.
