Joan Burke is best known for her work with Loaves and Fishes, the soup kitchen north of Downtown Sacramento. Now she'll also lead a new advisory board for Sacramento Steps Forward - a public/private non-profit working to end homelessness in Sacramento.
Ben Burton is executive director of Sacramento Steps Forward.
"We are thrilled that Joan Burke is going to be the lead on this. A lot of these decisions have been made in a very fragmented way. This is really a vehicle that's going to send a unified voice about homelessness."
Burke says the new panel will try to ensure $15 million in federal funding for homeless programs continue to come to Sacramento each year.
"We need to make sure that money is spent well and prudently and that's part of the responsibility of the board."
Burke has been a vocal proponent of creating a legal tent city…something city and county officials have yet to approve.
