Game wardens set the trap last Saturday after people reported that a bear was damaging their property. That triggered a flood of traffic on a Tahoe area Facebook page from people sympathetic to the bear.
"They're harassing the people who called the Sheriff's Office who then called us to complain that 'hey, I have a bear ripping the side of my house off.'"
That's Chris Healy with the Nevada Department of Wildlife. He says, not long after the trap was set, someone tampered with it.
"They used some kind of a cleaning solvent to put around the trap which…the trap was baited with food but if you put the cleaning solvent there the smell of that tends to make the bears go away."
Healy says tampering with traps is a crime and a threat to public safety.
