Insight: Net Metering / Teen Smoking / Poetry Out Loud / Legally Blonde

Net Metering Most homeowners and businesses with solar panels can create a surplus of energy that the utility companies will buy.  The practice is called net metering and it was created to foster a struggling solar industry in its infancy.  But now the solar industry is growing and the utility companies are trying to find a way to support customers that go "off the grid" while not passing the costs of infrastructure maintenance onto the customers still "on the grid."

Teen Smoking The United States Surgeon General's first report on youth smoking in nearly 20 years was released earlier this month and it found that the decade and a half decline in teen smoking has leveled off and remains an "epidemic."  This new report looks closely at the effects smoking has on teenagers who become addicted to cigarettes, such as stunted lung formation and increased risk of heart attack.  Here to discuss these new findings is a UC Merced professor who contributed to the surgeon general's report, Dr. Anna V. Song, and a former scientist for Phillip Morris who was the first major whistle blower against the tobacco industry, Dr. Victor DeNoble.

Poetry Out Loud The Poetry Out Loud competition has done for poetry what  spelling bees have done for spelling.  Monday, March 26 is the final day for the California Poetry Out Loud competition.  The winner will receive $200 from the National Endowment for the Arts and go on to compete in Washington, DC for a chance to win $500 in poetry books for his or her school.  Joining us to discuss the importance of the Poetry Out Loud competition is former chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts, Dana Gioia, who is not only the keynote speaker, but the creator of the competition.  Also joining us is the winner of the Sacramento County competition, Brittany Wiltz.
