Crews started work clearing the strip of land south of the rail station on "I" Street to make way for more than a dozen new spaces.
Linda Tucker with the City says there will also be a new crosswalk at the corner . It will provide easier access for people who park in Old Sacramento and walk to the station for their morning commute.
TUCKER: "The parking situation is limited and we know it will be moreso into the future. There will be continue to be a demand for parking at the current facility as well as the future intermodal."
Lister Construction of Vacaville says it will hire about 30 people to take down pine and orange trees on the site, lay paving, and install new exit lanes directly to "I" Street.
The parking spaces will not be included in the city's plan to lease out its parking operations.
