Sacramento police and fire departments will shrink July 1st if the city's proposed budget is passed.

Sacramento City Manager John Shirey says the city will layoff 62 firefighters and 35 police officers if the City Council approves the budget.

SHIREY: "We have to keep making adjustments in order to live within our means.  And this budget reflects more of the same, and, in fact, I would expect this for another year after the coming fiscal year."

Shirey estimates the City's budget deficit will be $18 million for the next fiscal year.  Besides the police and fire layoffs, 188 other city employees would be laid off.

The police department is actually threatened with three times as many layoffs of officers and support staff, but the city expects federal grants will be continued and will save about half of those jobs.
