The City's newest helicopter comes from Yamhill County in northern Oregon. That county couldn't afford the maintenance, but couldn't sell it because it's military surplus.
Police Sergeant Andrew Pettit says there will be some changes made to the aircraft, a 1974 Bell OH-58
PETTIT: "Our mechanic had to go through it and is still going through it to make sure that it meets our compliance levels and then also to make sure it can be retrofitted with our equipment -such as our computers, our lights."
Sacramento was next on the list of law enforcement agencies waiting for such an opportunity.
The department will not fly any additional hours, but the new addition should extend the life of the department's other two helicopters. They have 12,000 hours on them. The Bell has about 4,000.
