Sixteen-thousand people climb aboard San Joaquin Regional Transit buses on an average weekday.
Most of those buses are hybrid diesel electric which operate much like hybrid cars.
But Regional Transit's Paul Rapp said the 4 million dollar test project will put two electric buses into operation by early next year.
RAPP: "We anticipate the electric buses to be four times as efficient as our current diesel electric buses base on a miles per gallon equivalent of around 23 for the electric bus and 5-6 for our diesel electric."
The San Joaquin Valley, from Stockton to Bakersfield, is among the worst areas in the nation for air pollution, and the electric buses would generate zero emissions.
The project would also include a charging station where the buses can be fully recharged in less than 10 minutes.
The California Energy Commission supplied two and a half million dollars towards the project
