Under a proposal before the Sacramento City Council Tuesday, all businesses and residences would receive a fine after the third false alarm in a year's time.
Acting Fire Marshall Ed Bassett says the department's proposal includes fines for residential property but those fines are half of what they are for businesses, "It doesn't happen very often with residential structures. Most people call and say, 'Hey, I burned toast and it's not necessary for you to come over."
The Sacramento City Fire Department is asking the City Council to approve fines of up to $360 for businesses and $180 for private residences with an administrative penalty added after the sixth offense.
Bassett says there are about 3400 false alarms each year.
