Calaveras Unified School District started classes this week.
New this year is transitional kindergarten, that's for students who will turn 5 years old between November 2nd and December 2nd.
Previously students could be accepted into kindergarten as long they were 5 years old by December 2nd.
Calaveras Superintendent Mark Campbell says transitional kindergarten isn't mandatory but most eligible students are coming to class.
CAMPBELL: "Currently we have 41 students who are labeled as transitional kindergartners, that's about 25 percent of our total kindergarten population, the size of the class represents the size our county which is relatively small."
Transitional kindergartners only go to school for half a day while regular kindergartners spend the whole day.
Campbell says those transitional students will be better prepared for regular kindergarten next year.
