The Sacramento County Parks Director wants expanded authority to ban alcohol on the American River. Director Jeff Leatherman says he should have the power to ban alcohol on any day he reasonably could assume mass alcohol consumption would threaten public safety.
He says having that authority would have helped limit the problems at the recent "Rafting Gone Wild" event. "We've experienced both rock throwing at police officers and fire department personnel that were trying to assist those who are injured as well as a number of people highly intoxicated in and around the river, which is quite dangerous and a great concern for our safety personnel."
Leatherman is scheduled to go before the Board of Supervisors with his request on Tuesday.
Currently, alcohol use is only banned during Memorial, Independence Day, and Labor Day weekends on the American River between Hazel and Watt Avenue.
